In a shocking and controversial statement, Israeli Minister of Heritage, Amichai Eliyahu, has suggested that “one of the possible options” for Israel in the ongoing conflict with Hamas is to drop a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip. The comments, made during a radio interview, have sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Eliyahu’s remarks, with Netanyahu emphasizing that Israel is committed to adhering to international law and avoiding harm to innocent civilians.
Eliyahu, a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, not only used derogatory language to describe Gaza residents but also objected to humanitarian aid reaching the region. He expressed the view that there are no unassociated civilians in Gaza, implying that all residents are connected to Hamas.
Despite issuing a clarification, characterizing his comment as “metaphorical,” Eliyahu faces repercussions. Netanyahu has suspended him indefinitely from cabinet meetings, and a scheduled meeting was cancelled.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with world leaders calling for a ceasefire. This controversial statement adds further complexity to the already tense situation, raising concerns about the region’s stability and the safety of civilians on both sides.
