The Israeli military reportedly launched missile strikes against Iran, according to a senior U.S. military official who spoke to NPR on Thursday. There are also reports of explosions in Iraq and Syria.

These strikes are believed to be in response to an Iranian attack on Sunday, during which Tehran fired numerous drones and missiles at Israel. Most of Iran’s projectiles were intercepted or caused minimal damage. The extent of Israel’s strikes and the types of weapons used remain unclear.

A military official in Isfahan, Iran, stated that loud sounds heard east of the city were caused by air defences intercepting a “suspicious target,” with no damage reported. However, other Iranian news agencies suggested that the sounds were the result of intercepting drones.

Israel’s military and prime minister’s offices have not commented on the reported strikes.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on social media that Iran’s nuclear sites were undamaged.

Israel’s National Security Minister criticised the strikes as “weak” and insufficient.

Despite the military activity, commercial flights continue in and out of Israel, and there have been no changes to threat levels issued by the Home Front Command.

In Iran, flights were temporarily halted but resumed shortly afterward.

Western allies had urged Israel to refrain from military action to prevent escalating tensions in the region, particularly following an airstrike in Damascus that Iran blamed on Israel and which resulted in the deaths of two Iranian military commanders. Iran claimed that Sunday’s attack on Israel was in retaliation for this incident.
