The Israeli military announced that the head of the Hamas government in Gaza was “eliminated” in an airstrike.

The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it had “eliminated” Rawhi Mushtaha, the head of Hamas’ government in Gaza, along with two top security officials, during airstrikes conducted three months ago.

According to the military, the strike targeted an underground facility in northern Gaza that served as a command and control center. Mushtaha, along with commanders Sameh al-Siraj and Sami Oudeh, was reportedly hiding there at the time.

The statement described Mushtaha as a senior Hamas operative who played a key role in decisions regarding the group’s force deployment. Sameh al-Siraj oversaw Hamas’ security portfolio within its political bureau. Mushtaha was also noted as a close ally of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’ top leader, who is believed to have helped orchestrate the October 7 attack on Israel and remains in hiding in Gaza.
