Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday the decision to shut down the local branch of Qatar’s global news channel, Al Jazeera. Describing it as an “incitement channel,” Netanyahu emphasized the unanimous agreement of the government on this matter. The move comes amidst escalating tensions between Israel and the international news outlet.

In a separate development, Netanyahu firmly rejected Hamas’ demand for ending the conflict in Gaza in exchange for Israeli hostages. He expressed concerns that conceding to such demands would bolster the Islamist group’s grip on power in Palestine, posing a continued threat to Israel. Asserting Israel’s determination, Netanyahu declared that the nation would persist in its campaign until its objectives were accomplished.

The ongoing conflict, which erupted on October 7, has inflicted significant casualties on both sides. According to the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, the death toll has reached 34,683, with over 78,018 individuals sustaining injuries. The United Nations has urgently called for a ceasefire, citing a looming famine in northern Gaza.

However, efforts to broker peace face obstacles, with the United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken blaming Hamas for stalling negotiations. Blinken emphasized that the key to a ceasefire lies with Hamas. Despite diplomatic endeavors led by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, Hamas remains adamant, demanding that Israel halt its military operations and withdraw from Gaza.

In response to Israel’s warning of an attack on Rafah if hostages are not released, Hamas maintains its stance, while Israel refrains from sending a delegation to Cairo for peace talks. Blinken highlighted the necessity for Israel to present a plan to protect civilians, stressing that without such assurances, support for further military action would be untenable.

As the conflict persists, the humanitarian toll continues to escalate, straining relations not only between Israel and Palestine but also with its ally, the United States.
