Israeli Forces Discover Weapons Cache in Syrian Demilitarized Zone
Israeli forces uncovered a weapons cache in the Syrian demilitarized zone near Mount Hermon, aiming to block rebel advances. Coordinated with UN peacekeepers, the operation marks a shift since the 1974 ceasefire agreement.

Israeli forces have uncovered a “significant cache” of weapons on the Syrian side of the demilitarised zone near Mount Hermon, the highest peak in the Golan Heights, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday.
The IDF’s Mountain Brigade found military structures and control points in the area, where they neutralised the cache. The weapons included rockets, launchers, anti-tank missiles, mines, and explosive charges, along with intelligence assets, according to the IDF statement.
The operation was carried out in the 235 sq. km buffer zone to prevent Syrian rebel forces from advancing toward the Israeli border following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December.
Coordination with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which monitors the buffer zone, was maintained throughout the mission.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar held discussions with UNDOF commanders on Thursday to review the developments in the region.
Israeli officials have stated that their forces will remain in the demilitarised zone as long as necessary to ensure security and stability.
While the IDF has conducted brief operations in the buffer zone in the past, this marked the first instance since the zone’s creation in 1974 that Israeli forces established positions within it. The demilitarised zone was formed as part of a ceasefire agreement that concluded the Yom Kippur War.
Israel has declared the 1974 ceasefire agreement void, citing the need to restore order in Syria before resuming adherence to the terms.
