The Israeli military announced that it has taken “operational control” of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt as part of its military operations in the area. The army noted that special forces are scanning the region for terrorist infrastructure and militants. According to the military, Israeli forces are focusing on specific targets in eastern Rafah, and 20 militants have been killed since the strikes in Rafah began on Monday.

These strikes came after the Israeli war cabinet approved targeted operations against the Hamas militant group in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Although Hamas had accepted an Egyptian-Qatari ceasefire proposal, Israel said the deal did not meet its “core demands,” leading to continued strikes and further negotiations in Rafah.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that the truce proposal fell short of Israel’s demands but indicated that a delegation would be sent to Cairo to pursue an agreement through indirect negotiations.

Qatar’s foreign ministry also announced that it would send a delegation to Cairo to continue indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, indicating ongoing diplomatic efforts amid continued military activity.

The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties, with about 1,200 people killed and 252 others abducted, according to Israeli figures. Of those abducted, 133 are believed to remain in captivity in Gaza. The conflict has caused over 34,600 Palestinian casualties so far.
