In a tumultuous night for the residents of Rafah, Israel launched airstrikes on the city, intensifying pressure on Hamas just before crucial talks in Egypt aimed at securing a ceasefire. The strikes, aimed at Hamas targets, resulted in casualties, including five reported deaths and several injuries at the Kuwaiti hospital.

Despite the airstrikes, Hamas announced its approval of a ceasefire proposal put forth by Egypt and Qatar, sparking hope among the people of Rafah. The proposal includes a three-phase truce, involving a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the return of displaced Palestinians, and a hostage-prisoner exchange, ultimately aiming for a permanent ceasefire.

However, tensions remain high as Israel continues military operations in Rafah, seeking to advance its objectives in the conflict, including the release of hostages. The United States, a close ally of Israel, is reviewing Hamas’s response to the proposal.

International concern mounts over the possibility of an Israeli ground invasion of Rafah, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling such an incursion “intolerable.” Egypt and Jordan have also urged Israel to exercise restraint, emphasizing the grave humanitarian risks such an invasion would pose to the over one million Gazans in the city.

As the situation escalates, thousands of Gazans are leaving Rafah, seeking refuge in designated humanitarian areas. However, the capacity of these areas is limited, raising concerns about the welfare of those fleeing the conflict.

The unfolding events underscore the urgent need for a ceasefire to prevent further civilian suffering and deaths in Gaza, where the conflict has already claimed thousands of lives and displaced many more.
