Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government have decided to revoke the ceasefire agreement, putting the fate of hostages in Gaza at risk, as Reuters quoted a Hamas official as saying.
A senior Hamas official stated that Israel has unilaterally ended the Gaza ceasefire following a wave of airstrikes that killed dozens of Palestinians, according to medics cited in various reports. Hamas media, quoted by Reuters, confirmed that senior Hamas security official Mahmoud Abu Watfa was killed in the strikes.
Medical sources reported that at least 100 Palestinians, including several children, lost their lives, and dozens more were injured as Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple locations across the Gaza Strip.
In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency confirmed that they had launched extensive strikes on Hamas targets within Gaza.
According to Fox News, Israel consulted the White House before carrying out the airstrikes on Monday. Reuters quoted a Hamas official as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government chose to revoke the ceasefire deal, placing hostages in Gaza in jeopardy.
Netanyahu stated that he had ordered the military to take “strong action” against Hamas in response to the group’s refusal to release hostages and its rejection of all ceasefire proposals. “Israel will now intensify its military operations against Hamas,” stated a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.
Medics and witnesses reported that three homes in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza were hit, along with a building in Gaza City, while additional strikes targeted Khan Younis and Rafah. The Palestinian civil emergency service reported at least 35 Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
