Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned to flatten parts of Southern Lebanon and Beirut if the Hezbollah militant group intensifies its strikes on Israeli targets, thereby opening a second front in Israel’s war with Hamas. “If Hezbollah decides to open an all-out war, then with its own hands, it will turn Beirut and Southern Lebanon, which are not far from here, into Gaza and Khan Yunis,” said the Prime Minister.

Netanyahu issued the warning during his visit to the northern command’s headquarters of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), which oversees the units that have exchanged fire with Hezbollah since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7. These threatening remarks were made after a 54-year-old Israeli farmer was killed by an anti-tank missile dropped from Lebanon. Netanyahu, in his remarks, added that the images of the war-ravaged Gaza Strip show a glimpse of what could be in store for Lebanon if it opens a second front in Israel’s war with Hamas. He praised the Israeli military troops for having a “great spirit in their readiness for battle.”

Some days before, an Israeli civilian and three Hezbollah fighters were laid to rest in cross-border violence between both countries. Hezbollah has admitted to conducting 10 attacks in Northern Israel, triggering Israeli retaliation in Southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has confirmed its solidarity with Hamas. As fighting in the Gaza Strip escalated, there has been continuous cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah.

It is to be noted that the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas started on October 7, with the Hamas-led Palestinian militant group attacking Israel and Israel retaliating, causing a colossal loss of lives. It has been described as a humanitarian catastrophe by the UN. The healthcare system is on the verge of collapse, with hospitals being out of service and a severe shortage of essentials. The war has been taking place primarily in the Gaza Strip, along with clashes in the Israel-Lebanon border. This geopolitical crisis has become a major cause of concern.
