Israel Moves Forward with Legislation to Combat Organized Crime

To tackle organised crime and curb the possession of illegal weapons, particularly in Arab communities, the Israeli government is advancing new legislative measures. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that Justice Minister Yariv Levin has approved a memorandum of law for public review. The proposed legislation aims to strengthen enforcement against weapons offences, which have become a “scourge of the state,” claiming numerous lives in recent years.

The memorandum outlines a series of legislative amendments designed to empower law enforcement agencies with advanced tools to investigate weapons-related cases, streamline prosecution processes, and impose harsher penalties on offenders.

The legislation was developed through inter-ministerial collaboration, led by the Ministry of Justice. It included contributions from the Prime Minister’s Office’s team dedicated to combating crime in Arab society, the Ministry of National Security, the Israel Police, the Attorney General’s Office, and other security agencies.

“We are continuing to fight criminal organisations on multiple fronts,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the growing concerns over organised crime and illegal weapons in the country.
