Israel Defiant on Its Offensive Despite World Court’s Ruling

The International Court of Justice on 24th May 2024 ruled that Israel shall cease its offensive in Rafah, Gaza. This military operation in Gaza has almost killed 35,000 people in the Hamas-held territory. There are serious allegations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing genocide, but the Israeli ministers have dismissed Friday’s court hearing.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet has also rejected the allegations brought up by South Africa, i.e., of genocide, claiming that they are “false, outrageous, and morally repugnant.”

His cabinet has also stated, “Israel is acting based on its territory and its citizens, consistent with its moral values and in compliance with international law.”

Rafah is a town in southern Gaza, which is home to almost 1 million Palestinian refugees who’ve been displaced by Israel’s ground offensive. If Israel continues its offensive, it could lead to a serious humanitarian crisis in the region. This war, sparked by Hamas on Oct 7 last year, has also played a major role in widening the gulf between Israel and its allies and has led to serious strains between Israel and its closest ally, the US.
