Israel is set to open a new land crossing into the Gaza Strip aimed at easing the delivery of aid to Palestinians in need. The move comes after mounting pressure from Western and Arab allies, urging Israel to step up its efforts to address the spiraling humanitarian crisis in the region.

The decision follows a recent cross-border attack by Gaza’s ruling Hamas Islamists, which prompted Israel to cut off supplies to the impoverished coastal enclave. In response to the crisis, Israel has gradually reopened two cargo crossings and established a new crossing on its border, in addition to announcing the admission of Gaza-bound aid shipments at its southern port of Ashdod.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced the creation of a new crossing point on the northern part of the Gaza border, which will significantly reduce the time and effort required to transport aid from Ashdod, located 40 km (25 miles) away. The new crossing point, situated between the Israeli village of Zikim and the Palestinian village of As-Siafa, will facilitate the delivery of aid brought in overland from neighboring Jordan.

Gallant emphasized that these developments would greatly enhance the flow of aid to Gaza, stating, “We plan to flood Gaza with aid.” He also highlighted that the new crossing point would streamline security checks and strengthen collaboration with international partners.

Despite these efforts, there has been a discrepancy between Israeli and U.N. estimates regarding the amount of aid reaching Gaza. With most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people facing homelessness, famine, and widespread disease due to devastated civilian infrastructure, the need for aid remains critical.

In addition to land crossings, Israel has facilitated aid deliveries to Gaza through a maritime corridor and opened its airspace to foreign planes conducting airdrops of aid for Palestinians. These measures aim to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population and address the urgent humanitarian needs in the region.
