The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on Friday expressed support for Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, who was recently arrested on sedition charges in Bangladesh. This statement followed ISKCON Bangladesh’s earlier announcement distancing itself from the monk, stating his actions “do not represent” the organization. Charu Chandra Das Brahmachari, ISKCON Bangladesh’s general secretary, confirmed that Chinmoy Krishna Das had been removed from all organizational roles for disciplinary violations, according to The Dhaka Tribune.
In a subsequent clarification, ISKCON reaffirmed its solidarity with the former member. While acknowledging that Chinmoy Krishna Das was no longer an official representative of the organization, ISKCON emphasized its commitment to defending his rights.
“ISKCON has not, and does not, distance itself from supporting Chinmoy Krishna Das’s rights and freedom to peacefully advocate for the protection of Hindus and their places of worship,” the statement read. It further clarified that the organization had long stated his lack of official affiliation with ISKCON in Bangladesh.
The earlier distancing statement came amid calls for a ban on ISKCON in Bangladesh, with allegations labeling it a “radical organization” inciting communal unrest. These claims led to a legal petition seeking a ban, filed by a lawyer who referenced media reports.
Charu Chandra Das reiterated that ISKCON had no connection to Chinmoy Krishna Das’s activities. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s High Court rejected the plea to ban ISKCON. A two-judge bench, comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury, declined the request despite heightened tensions following the death of a lawyer in clashes between security forces and supporters of Chinmoy Krishna Das.
