Middle East: Iran’s United Nations mission stated early Sunday that Tehran had concluded its retaliation for an attack on its diplomatic compound in Syria, cautioning Israel against repeating such actions. Following Iran’s initial military strike on Israeli territory, the statement emphasised that any further mistakes by Israel would prompt a significantly harsher response.

The mission underscored the conflict between Iran and what it termed the “rogue Israeli regime,” urging the U.S. to refrain from involvement.

Sirens sounded as suspected drone interceptions occurred across Israel, with the Israel Defence Forces claiming to have intercepted most of the 200 missiles and drones targeting the country. Reports indicated that the U.S. military in the region had also shot down an undisclosed number of drones.

Despite this, a senior Israeli official vowed an “unprecedented” response, advising readiness for potential further actions. In Washington, President Joe Biden, a staunch supporter of Israel, cut short his weekend vacation to reaffirm his commitment to Israel’s security.

The IRGC’s strike was portrayed as a necessary reaction due to the UN Security Council’s failure to condemn the alleged attack on Iran’s diplomatic facility. However, Iran’s warning of potential Israeli retaliation suggested a desire to prevent further escalation, avoiding a broader Middle Eastern conflict or full-scale war between the two nations. This de-escalatory stance was directed towards both Israel and the U.S.
