IPL 2024 Auction: Mitchell Starc Bags the Top Honors

The much-awaited 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction concluded in Dubai on Tuesday. The teams collectively spent close to Rs 230 crore at the auction. A new record was created when two players breached the Rs 20 crore mark for the first time in the history of IPL. In another first, the 2024 auction marked the first instance of a live audience being present at the event.
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who is making a comeback in the IPL after eight long years, emerged as the most expensive buy. After an intense faceoff with Gujarat Titans (GT), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) succeeded in buying him for a whopping Rs. 24.75 crore. Fellow Australian and captain of the World Cup-winning Australian cricket team, Pat Cummins, became the second player to cross the Rs 20 crore barrier when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) outbid Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to sign him for Rs. 20.50 crore.
India’s Harshal Patel was the costliest Indian player, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) shelling out a huge amount of Rs. 11.75 crore for the death-over specialist and all-rounder. Furthermore, Sameer Rizvi, a batter from Uttar Pradesh, emerged as the costliest uncapped Indian player in this auction after being bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs. 8.4 crore.
A total of 72 players were sold out at the auction. The 17th edition of IPL, which made its debut in 2008, is likely to start in March 2024.
