Meerut: A tragic road accident on Anupshahr Road in Bulandshahr early Friday morning claimed the lives of five individuals — including two women and a 10-year-old boy — and left 27 others injured. The victims were migrant labourers returning from Punjab to Uttar Pradesh in a truck that collided with another moving truck.

According to some of the injured, the truck driver had halted at a roadside eatery late at night and may have consumed alcohol. However, before succumbing to his injuries, the driver reportedly told the police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

SP (Rural) Tejveer Singh stated that the crash occurred around 4 a.m. and involved 36 passengers en route to Shahjahanpur. While three people were declared dead at the district hospital, others were transferred to Meerut for further treatment. He also confirmed that an FIR would be registered and that efforts were underway to apprehend the second truck driver, who fled the scene. The police’s swift response and timely medical care were instrumental in saving lives.

The deceased include truck driver Sunil Kumar (32) from Haryana, and Shahjahanpur natives Ravi Kumar (25), ShivDai Devi (55), Krishna (10), and Nathia Devi (42).

Dr. Diwakar Chaudhary, emergency medical officer at Meerut Medical College, said 27 patients — including several minors — had been admitted, with most suffering fractures in their limbs and chest.

Vijendra Kumar, a 30-year-old from Shahjahanpur, recounted his personal loss. “Six of us had gone to Punjab eight months ago for brick kiln work. Since it ended recently, we were returning. I lost my mother, sister-in-law, and nephew, along with Rs 41,000 in savings,” he said.

Another survivor, daily-wage labourer Ramveer Singh, said they departed Punjab on Thursday afternoon. “The contractor had arranged the truck. Around midnight, the driver stopped at a dhaba and drank alcohol. We were asleep when the accident happened,” he recalled.
