In recent developments concerning diplomatic security and international relations, concerns have emerged regarding threats against Indian Diplomatic Missions, which serve as the official representations of India in foreign countries. This pressing issue has raised alarms about the safety and security of Indian Diplomats and their premises abroad.

The primary cause of concern centers around the involvement of “Sikhs for Justice,” a U.S.-based advocacy group that advocates for the creation of an independent Sikh state known as Khalistan. It’s worth noting that this organization is banned in India due to its separatist agenda. The group’s latest statement calls for the shutdown of Indian Missions on September 25, as they continue to promote their Khalistan movement.

The State Department of the U.S. issued a caution against attacking foreign missions on its soil. The crisis comes to light between India and Canada relating to the murder of Sikh Separatist Leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Allegations have surfaced, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggesting a potential link between the assassins and agents of the Indian government.

The spokesperson for the U.S. government asserts that vandalism or violence targeting diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the U.S. is considered a criminal offense. This implies that such actions are not only condemned but also subject to legal consequences under U.S. law. The U.S. government is taking these threats seriously and actively investigating and responding to them to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic missions and personnel on U.S. soil.

In an effort to pre-empt any potential violent incidents targeting Indian Diplomatic Missions in the U.S., the State Department has taken proactive measures. This move follows a recent incident in March 2023 when alleged pro-Khalistan individuals unlawfully entered the premises of the Indian Consulate in San Francisco, attempting to vandalize the property.
