Russia has acknowledged for the first time that some Ukrainian forces have crossed over to the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. However, they have been warned that they are facing “Hellfire,” and a Ukrainian soldier’s life expectancy there is only about two days.
In the first formal admission of its kind, the chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had established a foothold on the east bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine.
Andriy Yermak reported that Ukrainian forces had crossed the river and entrenched themselves “against all odds” and that their nation’s counteroffensive, which has so far failed to achieve a significant breakthrough, was “developing.”
In a statement, Vladimir Saldo, the governor of the portion of the Kherson region under Moscow’s control, acknowledged that Ukrainian forces had successfully crossed the river, which Russia had perceived as a formidable obstacle that Kyiv’s soldiers would find challenging to cross.
However, he claimed that first-hand information from Russia’s “Dnepr” military grouping had been provided, claiming that Russian forces had the Ukrainians pinned down, were letting “Hell fire” rain down on them, and that they would eventually be destroyed.
Reuters was unable to independently confirm his claims.
Saldo said, “our additional forces have now been brought in. The enemy is trapped in (the settlement of) Krynki, and a fiery hell has been arranged for him: bombs, rockets, heavy flamethrower systems, artillery shells, and drones.”
“They (the Ukrainians) are sitting in basements and run from one basement to another at night. In the last two or three days alone, total enemy losses have totaled about a hundred fighters.”
