INS Mumbai Joins Multi-Nation Exercise La Perouse in Jakarta
Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai arrives in Jakarta for La Perouse 2025, a collaborative maritime exercise involving navies from nine nations, including France, Australia, and the United States.
The Indian Navy’s indigenously built guided missile destroyer, INS Mumbai, is docked in Jakarta, Indonesia, to participate in the fourth edition of the multinational exercise La Perouse. This important maritime event brings together the navies of India, France, Indonesia, Australia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada with an aim to enhance cooperation and interoperability among like-minded nations.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the exercise aims to promote maritime situational awareness through collaborative efforts in maritime surveillance, interdiction operations, and air operations. It also facilitates progressive training and information sharing to strengthen tactical coordination among the participating navies.
The ministry’s press release stated, “The indigenously designed and built guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai is participating in the fourth edition of the multinational exercise La Perouse. This edition will see the participation of personnel and assets from various maritime partners, including the Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, Royal Navy, United States Navy, Indonesian Navy, Royal Malaysian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy, and Royal Canadian Navy.”
The exercise will involve advanced multi-domain operations, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defence, cross-deck landing, and tactical manoeuvres. Constabulary missions such as Visit, Board, Search, and Seize (VBSS) operations will also be conducted, showcasing the capabilities of the participating navies.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Navy spokesperson highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “#IndianNavy’s mission Indigenously-built guided missile destroyer #INSMumbai arrived Jakarta, #Indonesia, on #15Jan25 to participate in Multinational Exercise #LAPEROUSE25. Exercise #LAPEROUSE will see navies from nine countries engage in advanced-level exercises across all domains of maritime warfare. This initiative promotes the exchange of best practices & strengthens long-term maritime partnerships for a safe and secure maritime domain.”
The Defence Ministry emphasised that the Indian Navy’s participation underlines its high level of synergy, coordination, and commitment to a rules-based international maritime order. Additionally, the initiative is in line with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, which promotes maritime cooperation for a secure Indo-Pacific region.
As the participating navies prepare for this complex and advanced maritime exercise, Exercise La Perouse serves as a platform to foster closer ties and enhance operational effectiveness, paving the way for stronger partnerships and a safer global maritime environment.
