The Air Force Chief emphasized the swift pace of China’s infrastructure buildup along the LAC, including the development of roads, airbases, and other strategic assets that could facilitate the rapid deployment of Chinese military forces. Indian Air Force Chief Amar Preet Singh’s remarks came ahead of Indian Air Force Day, against a backdrop of ongoing tensions between India and China along the border in Eastern Ladakh. The situation along the LAC has been tense since April 2020, when a series of clashes and stand-offs began. However, recent developments indicate that the two countries have made some progress in resolving certain disputes.

At a press conference ahead of Air Force Day, the Chief of Air Staff also said that India was upgrading infrastructure in the area quickly.

Although both sides have avoided confrontations in recent months, the possibility of escalation remains due to the presence of heavily militarized forces along the LAC. Both India and China are on high alert, with troops stationed near the border.

According to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, 75% of the disengagement issues have been resolved, but he expressed concern over the increased militarization of the border. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that the border situation is “stable” after troop disengagement at four key locations in Eastern Ladakh, including the Galwan Valley.

The last formal disengagement along the LAC took place in September 2022, when both sides pulled back troops to disengage from Patrolling Point-15 in the Gogra-Hot Springs area of Eastern Ladakh.

Despite the progress, several friction points remain unresolved. These include contentious areas in Eastern Ladakh, such as the northern and southern banks of Pangong Tso, and other points in Arunachal Pradesh.

While disengagement has been completed in some areas, a sense of unease persists due to China’s continuous infrastructure buildup, which could potentially enable swift mobilization in the future.
