Infosys Co-founder Advocates Compassionate Capitalism and Social Responsibility for India’s Prosperity

Software industry stalwart N R Narayana Murthy emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in India’s social welfare policies, stressing the significance of reciprocal contributions from citizens availing government services. Speaking at the 26th Bengaluru Tech Summit 2023, Murthy highlighted the essence of “compassionate capitalism” as pivotal for India’s growth from a poor to a prosperous nation.
In his address, Murthy articulated, “Nothing should be given free,” advocating that individuals benefitting from subsidies should reciprocate towards societal improvement. He urged for a conscientious approach wherein free services would be correlated with responsibilities; for instance, providing free electricity in exchange for increased school attendance.
Highlighting his transformation from a leftist ideology to a “determined compassionate capitalist,” Murthy underscored that compassionate capitalism holds the key to India’s prosperity rather than socialist or communist approaches. He emphasized the significance of capitalism rooted in a free market and entrepreneurship for addressing poverty issues in any country.
Addressing taxation concerns, Murthy acknowledged the necessity for higher taxation in a country like India, given the imperative need for public services for the impoverished masses. He emphasized the need to accept higher taxation as a part of fostering efficient public goods, significantly higher than what developed countries may typically impose.
While expressing admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government’s National Education Policy, he encouraged a collective effort from political parties, intellectuals, academics, and corporate leaders to boost foreign direct investments and devise practical solutions for India’s progress.
Discussing the path to improving Bengaluru, Murthy proposed bolstering public governance systems, expanding English medium schools, and expediting infrastructure development, particularly completing metro services to key business hubs like Electronic City.
Murthy also advocated a shift towards three-shift work models in the infrastructure industry to accelerate project completion, drawing inspiration from other countries where such practices fuel ambition and productivity.
He highlighted the significance of studying China’s economic trajectory to harness valuable lessons that could potentially aid India in advancing at a pace commensurate with its East Asian counterpart. However, he acknowledged the inherent differences in historical context and governance models between the two nations.
In a call for collaboration and innovation, Murthy urged collective action from leaders across domains to strategize solutions, emphasizing the need for practical measures to attract foreign investments and drive infrastructural growth.
