India has recently concluded the P20 Summit, a gathering of parliamentarians from G20 nations, during which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized the importance of multilateralism in addressing pressing global issues. The summit brought together influential parliamentarians from the world’s largest economies, focusing on various critical matters, including terrorism, sustainable development, and sovereignty.

During his inaugural address at the P20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the world to unite in defining and condemning terrorism with a unified voice. He emphasized that a divided world cannot effectively address the challenges facing humanity. India has firsthand experience of the devastating impact of terrorism, as the Prime Minister recalled the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament. He stressed that terrorism, regardless of its origin or form, is an affront to humanity, and the world must stand united against it.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also played a significant role during the summit. He engaged in discussions with world leaders and expressed India’s displeasure with the European Parliament’s attempt to bring a resolution to the internal issue of Manipur. Birla underlined the importance of national sovereignty and firmly protested against the interference in India’s internal matters by external bodies. He asserted that every nation and parliament should be respected for its sovereignty and not subject to external scrutiny.

As part of the P20 Summit, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla engaged in bilateral meetings with leaders from various countries. Notably, during his meeting with Valentina Matvienko, the Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, both sides acknowledged the long-standing and deep relations between their nations, especially during times of crisis. Birla also met with Turkey’s Numan Kurtulmus, where he discussed India’s “Operation Dost” as a symbol of friendship toward Turkey and inquired about Turkey’s recovery efforts following a recent earthquake.

The P20 Summit serves as a platform for influential parliamentarians from G20 nations to collaborate on global policy-making and decision-making. During the summit, countries agreed to work together on sustainable development goals, women-led development, green energy, and digital public infrastructure. India, despite handing over the presidency to Brazil, remains committed to these priorities, seeking tangible results and conclusions in these crucial areas.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized the importance of the views and inputs shared during the summit’s sessions on sustainable development goals, green energy, women-led development, and digital public infrastructure. These discussions are expected to strengthen the G-20 process and promote human-centered development in an interconnected world.

Parliamentarians from around the world who participated in the P20 Summit rallied around Paragraph 27 of the joint statement, which emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue as catalysts for promoting international peace, prosperity, and harmony. The summit has reaffirmed India’s growing prominence on the global stage and its role in addressing critical global issues, including poverty, inequality, terrorism, and climate change.

In conclusion, the successful conclusion of the P20 Summit demonstrates India’s commitment to multilateralism and its active role in addressing global challenges. Prime Minister Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s calls for unity against terrorism and the defense of national sovereignty resonate with the broader international community, reaffirming India’s role as a global leader.
