In a significant development aimed at transforming India’s electoral landscape, the Law Commission, led by Chairperson Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, engaged in discussions with the high-level committee on simultaneous elections, presided over by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The meeting, which took place in Delhi, is part of the ongoing efforts to chart a roadmap for holding synchronized elections throughout the country.
The high-level committee has embarked on a mission to explore the possibility of conducting simultaneous polls at various levels of government. To foster inclusivity and gather diverse perspectives, the committee has invited political parties to share their insights. Parties will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on a “mutually agreed date” or submit written views over the next three months.
The core objective of this endeavor is to streamline India’s electoral process. The Law Commission is working on a formula to harmonize assembly polls, potentially altering the tenure of legislative assemblies, thereby enabling concurrent elections with the Lok Sabha in 2029 and beyond.
One of the key strategies being devised is the creation of a common electoral roll for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies. This approach aims to reduce costs and minimize the manpower required for conducting what is currently a largely identical exercise, managed separately by the Election Commission and state election commissions.
Ultimately, the commission seeks to ensure that voters only visit the polling booth once, even as they cast their ballots for both state and national elections. By working out the logistical intricacies, India is taking steps towards a more efficient and streamlined electoral process, a vital development in the world’s largest democracy.
