September 12, 2024: At the second edition of the International Conference on Green Hydrogen at Bharat Mandapam, Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a virtual message highlighting India’s commitment to tackling climate change and making a greener planet to become a global leader in green hydrogen. Reflecting on the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in January 2023, he stated, “We aim to position India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023, is a critical step toward realizing this ambition. It will drive innovation, build infrastructure, stimulate industry growth, and attract investment in the green hydrogen sector.”
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi emphasized India’s leadership in renewable energy development, stating, “India’s non-fossil fuel capacity has increased nearly 300% over the last decade, and our solar energy capacity has seen an astounding 3000% growth in the same period.”
In this three-day conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the world to work together to find a solution for the adoption of Green Hydrogen. “India is fully committed to building a cleaner, greener planet. We were the first among G20 nations to meet our Paris Agreement commitments on green energy, well ahead of schedule. While we continue to strengthen existing solutions, we are also focused on embracing new and innovative approaches. Green hydrogen is one such breakthrough, with the potential to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors like refineries, fertilizers, steel, and heavy-duty transportation,” he stated. This conference offers a deep dive into the world of Green Hydrogen.
The second International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2024 (ICGH2024) is being conducted in collaboration with 6 international partners from the US, EU, Australia, Japan, and Korea. Day 1 of the conference witnessed 17 sessions covering sectors for the use of Green Hydrogen. The conference was organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, in association with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The conference started on 11th September and will continue until 13th September.
Shri Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, highlighted India’s initiatives to expand renewable energy and promote green hydrogen under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). He stated that the mission aims to attract ₹8 lakh crore in investments, create 6 lakh jobs, reduce reliance on imported natural gas (saving ₹1 lakh crore), and cut carbon emissions by 5 MMT by 2030.
Shri Hardeep S. Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, underscored India’s goal to produce 5 MMT of green hydrogen by 2030, requiring $100 billion in investment and 125 GW of new renewable energy capacity. The mission will help reduce 15 MMT of CO2 emissions annually and cut import costs. It includes pilot projects, hydrogen hubs, and R&D initiatives, with cooperation from the government and industry.
Shri Bhupinder S. Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reiterated India’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, in line with the Panchamrit plan. He discussed the growing demand for hydrogen, projected to reach 29 MMT by 2050, and the implementation of the SIGHT programme.
Prof. Ajay K. Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasized the need for innovative research to make green hydrogen scalable. The session also featured a presentation on “India’s Journey Towards a Green Hydrogen Economy,” concluding with a Vote of Thanks from Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR, who highlighted India’s leadership in green hydrogen.
