Indian Woman Faces Contempt Charges for Using Derogatory Language Against the Judge and the Court
Delhi High Court has initiated suo motu contempt against an Indian woman living in Australia for using derogatory language against a judge during an online hearing.
On closely viewing the incident, the High Court directed the woman to appear in person in court on April 16, also ordered FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) to impound her passport or visa in case she arrives in India before the hearing.
Justice Leela Bansali Krishna initiated a contempt action against the woman for her use of derogatory language against the judge and court while logged in to the virtual conference where her matter was listed. On January 10, after the date was given in her matter, the woman, Anita Kumari Gupta – the plaintiff in the case, had joined the virtual conference and used abusive language against the judge and the court.
The court recorded in its order the words Anita uttered during the ongoing online conference, “How could item no. 11 be taken before item no. 10,” along with sentences like, “Ye **li kya kar rahi hai, what the f… is going on in this court.”
The court issued a show cause notice to the woman living in Sydney, as to why she should not be punished under the Contempt of Courts Act.
