Indian Student Shares Harrowing Experience Amidst Canada’s Education Crisis
Amid the allure of global education, Rinda Kathore’s experience as an international student in Canada reveals a bleak reality. Opting for a post-graduate diploma in healthcare management at Cape Breton University, her expectations soon gave way to the harrowing challenges she faced.
Arriving in April 2022, Kathore noticed a surge in immigration over the next months, leading to a housing and rental crisis. Accommodation became scarce, forcing students into cramped, substandard living conditions. “Canadian landlords exploited the situation, charging exorbitant rents,” Kathore lamented, highlighting the profit-driven exploitation.
Moreover, the inflation spike compounded rental woes, with Kathore witnessing a staggering rise in housing costs from January 2023. The lack of regulatory measures empowered what she termed ‘slumlords,’ exacerbating the plight of struggling students.
Shocking inadequacies in infrastructure startled Kathore as she recalled classes being conducted in cinema theatres due to space shortages. Even with the influx of thousands, the university struggled to provide adequate facilities, leading to protests and demands for proper classrooms.
The dynamic educational landscape further disrupted schedules, causing distress among students, particularly those reliant on part-time jobs. Kathore bemoaned the continuous alterations every intake, leaving students grappling with unforeseen changes.
In addition to educational setbacks, Kathore shed light on Canada’s healthcare system, citing lengthy waiting periods for basic medical care. The scarcity of doctors, long queues for appointments, and referrals to other specialists portrayed a healthcare crisis.
Contrary to promised co-op programs and lucrative job prospects, Kathore alleged exploitation of international students for menial roles, undermining their educational investments. The lack of adequate support and employment opportunities left a sense of disillusionment among students, deeming their education undervalued.
Her revelations of a system failing to deliver on its promises and exploiting international students for cheap labor underscore a stark contrast to the envisioned educational dreams. Kathore’s ordeal reflects the sobering reality behind the glossy facade of pursuing education in Canada.
