On Monday, July 15th, at the 45th COSPAR scientific assembly in Busan, South Korea, renowned Indian space scientists Prahlad Chandra Agrawal and Anil Bhardwaj were honoured with prestigious awards for their contributions to space science. Agrawal received the Harrie Massey Award, while Bhardwaj was awarded the Vikram Sarabhai Medal, highlighting their leadership and research excellence in space science.
Prahlad Chandra Agrawal, a retired professor from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, was honoured with the Harrie Massey Award, which is given for leadership in space research. Agrawal’s notable achievements include leading the AstroSat programme, India’s first multi-wavelength astronomy satellite launched in 2015, which has contributed to over 300 research papers. His involvement in the Chandrayaan-1 mission also stands out as a significant contribution to India’s space endeavours.
Anil Bhardwaj, who has served as the director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad since 2017, received the Vikram Sarabhai Medal, awarded for outstanding space science research in developing countries. Bhardwaj has played a crucial role in all recent ISRO missions, including Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, and the Aditya-L1 missions, contributing extensively to the field of planetary space sciences and solar system exploration.
The awards ceremony underscores the global recognition of Indian contributions to space science. The Committee on Space Research, established in 1958 following the launch of the first satellite by the Soviet Union, continues to be a pivotal platform for space scientists globally, fostering international cooperation and advancing the frontiers of space research.
