The Indian Navy conducted a successful operation to rescue 23 Pakistani fishermen from Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea. The operation lasted for over 12 hours and involved the interception of the hijacked vessel FV Al-Kambar with the aid of Indian Navy warships INS Sumedha and INS Trishul. Through tactical measures mentioned in popular working techniques (SOPs), the pirates have been coerced to surrender without any bloodshed, ensuring the secure rescue of the crew.

This marks the second operation in a brief span in which the Indian Navy successfully forced Somali pirates to give up without resorting to violence. Just earlier this month, a comparable operation saw over 30 Somali pirates surrendering without any firefight or bloodshed. In that instance, INS Kolkata became instrumental in coercing all 35 pirates to surrender, allowing for the secure evacuation of 17 crew members from the hijacked provider vessel, which was used as a mother ship by the pirates.

In another recent incident, the Indian Navy responded to a piracy attack on an Iranian fishing vessel inside the Arabian Sea, diverting naval ships to intercept the hijacked vessel. This proactive approach demonstrates the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the area and the protection of seafarers regardless of their nationality.

These operations are part of the Indian Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat piracy in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Earlier this year, the Indian Navy also responded to a distress call from a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden, where it successfully rescued 21 crew members, including one Indian national, after the vessel was hit by a missile and set ablaze.

The Indian Navy’s rapid and effective actions underscore India’s resolve to combat piracy and uphold international maritime laws, ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities in the region.
