The Indian Navy is closely monitoring the movements of a Chinese submarine and warships engaged in a naval drill with Pakistan in the Indian Ocean, according to government sources. The Navy has been tracking the Chinese platforms since their entry into the Indian Ocean region through the Malacca Strait. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has deployed various platforms, including frontline warships and a submarine, for the Sea Guardian exercise with Pakistan. India’s comprehensive maritime domain awareness includes monitoring all movements in the Indian Ocean region in line with national security interests, the sources noted.

The Sea Guardian-3 exercise involves two phases, harbor and sea, aiming to enhance defense cooperation between China and Pakistan. The navies will share experiences on contemporary maritime security challenges and conduct advanced-level naval operations, including maritime security operations, tactical maneuvers, warfare-related exercises, and search and rescue operations. The exercise is expected to strengthen the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and China.

The growing cooperation between China and Pakistan raises concerns, particularly as Beijing seeks to expand its footprint in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). India has been vigilant about Chinese naval activities in the region and maintains a watch on such movements to safeguard national security interests.

China’s participation in naval exercises with Pakistan, coupled with its presence in the Indian Ocean, underscores the geopolitical dynamics in the region and the strategic interests of the involved nations. The Indian Navy’s proactive monitoring aligns with its commitment to maintaining maritime security and safeguarding its maritime interests in the Indian Ocean.
