A man from Meerut has achieved a new Guinness World Record by lifting a 50kg weight with his teeth while performing a handstand and balancing his two children, who together weigh 71kg, on his back. The incredible feat was accomplished on a television reality show in Italy.
Vikas Swami, 40, from Karnawal village, had earlier secured his first Guinness World Record in 2023 by lifting an 80kg weight with his teeth on an Indian reality show. His journey into extreme weightlifting began years ago, with milestones such as setting an Indian record in 2021 and an Asian record just four months later by lifting 121kg. His two sons, Anmol (11) and Aditya (17), have also earned Guinness World Records alongside him, in addition to securing seven national and international records each.
Despite his accomplishments, Swami laments the lack of recognition from the government. “Outside my village, no one acknowledges my achievements. My financial condition is so dire that I struggle to afford a complete diet and proper nutrition,” he told The Times of India.
Swami’s journey has been marked by hardship. In 2010, he survived a severe accident while returning from Muzaffarnagar on his bike, sustaining multiple injuries, including a nail piercing his head. At the time, he worked as a bus driver to support his family. With no savings left, he was forced to return to work despite his injuries, leading to complications such as memory loss. He resorted to writing students’ names and locations on his palms to ensure their safe drop-off. Unable to afford medical care, he even removed his stitches by himself.
Following the accident, Swami suffered from painful lumps in his waist for two years. A doctor advised him to take up yoga, which he began practicing in 2012 using a book. Years of dedication eventually healed him.
However, his struggles did not end there. In 2019, new government regulations disrupted private school bus operations, resulting in his unemployment. Though he briefly worked as a yoga teacher in a private school, the COVID-19 pandemic led to his dismissal after just four-and-a-half months.
During his free time, Swami began training in extreme weightlifting, starting with two bricks weighing about 6kg. Over time, he increased his strength and now lifts up to 121kg. Despite multiple records, he remains uncertain about his future. Unable to afford the registration fees for competitions, he relies on charity and free government rations to feed his family.
Currently, Swami lives in a single-room house in poor condition and is struggling to find stable employment. He runs a YouTube channel, Swami and Sons, and hopes for government recognition or financial support to continue his sport. “If my talent is acknowledged, my game will improve, and life will be a little easier. Otherwise, I am unsure how long I can continue,” he said.
