In the midst of a diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma responded sharply to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding the killing of pro-Khalistan militant Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The diplomatic row ensued earlier this year when Trudeau hinted at potential Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s murder.

Verma, in an exclusive interview with CTV News Channel, reiterated India’s willingness to cooperate but emphasized the need for “specific and relevant” evidence to support Trudeau’s claims. He questioned the fairness of the accusations, stating, “Even before the investigation is completed, India was convicted. Is that a rule of law?”

When asked about India’s perceived lack of cooperation, Verma argued, “India was asked to cooperate, which means you are already convicted, and you better cooperate. We took it in very different interpretations, but we always said that if there is anything specific and relevant and communicated to us, we will look into it.”

In an earlier interview with The Globe and Mail, Verma underscored that neither Canada nor its allies had presented concrete evidence related to Nijjar’s killing. “There is no specific or relevant information provided in this case for us to assist them in the investigation,” he stated.

The tension escalated when Trudeau, on September 18, mentioned “credible allegations” linking Indian agents to Nijjar’s killing in Surrey, British Columbia. Subsequently, both countries expelled diplomats, with India initially suspending visa services to Canada. However, recent developments have seen a partial restoration of visa services and the resumption of electronic visas for Canadian nationals.

Verma, vehemently denying India’s involvement, expressed concerns about the impact of Trudeau’s public statements on the Canadian Police’s investigation. “Where is the evidence? Where is the conclusion of the investigation?” he questioned, suggesting that the probe had been tainted by political influence.

Highlighting the confidentiality of diplomatic conversations, Verma dismissed the idea of using such exchanges as evidence in court, emphasizing their protection under international law. He urged a professional resolution to disputes through communication and dialogue.

While expressing concern about his safety and security amid threats, Verma called for Canada to address the issue of Khalistan supporters on its soil. Additionally, he revealed that India had made multiple extradition requests to Ottawa over the past few years, awaiting any action.

As the diplomatic discourse intensifies, the international community watches closely, anticipating developments in this strained relationship between India and Canada.
