Indian ‘Helper’ Killed in Ukrainian Air Strike on Russian Forces in Donetsk
Amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, a tragic incident has claimed the life of a 23-year-old Indian national, Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya, in the Donetsk region on the Russia-Ukraine border. Mangukiya, hailing from Gujarat’s Surat district, had been working as a security helper for the Russian Army since December 2023. The fatal air strike occurred on February 21, resulting in Mangukiya’s untimely demise.
Reports indicate that Mangukiya and a group of Indian workers were targeted by Ukrainian missiles while they were engaged in military activities, with Mangukiya reportedly practicing firing maneuvers at the time of the attack. The harrowing ordeal unfolded as the group found themselves under fire, forcing them to seek refuge in a trench. Tragically, Mangukiya succumbed to the onslaught, leaving behind a grieving family and shocked colleagues.
Fellow worker Sameer Ahmad recounted the devastating scene, describing how he witnessed Mangukiya’s death firsthand. Ahmad’s chilling testimony sheds light on the perilous conditions faced by Indian nationals contracted to support Russian forces in the conflict-ridden region. Despite pleas for assistance, the Indian Embassy’s response has been reportedly inadequate, leaving workers feeling abandoned and vulnerable.
Concerns surrounding the safety and treatment of Indian workers employed by the Russian Army have been mounting, with multiple appeals for intervention directed towards Indian authorities. The recent plea from Mangukiya’s father, urging for his son’s repatriation amidst escalating hostilities, underscores the urgency of the situation. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Mangukiya’s tragic fate is not an isolated incident, with other Indian workers expressing fear and desperation as they navigate the perilous landscape of armed conflict.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine persists, questions arise regarding the welfare and rights of foreign nationals embroiled in the conflict. The tragic death of Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya serves as a stark reminder of the human toll exacted by geopolitical tensions, highlighting the need for diplomatic intervention and proactive measures to safeguard the lives of individuals caught in the crossfire.
