Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s Official UK Visit: Strengthening Bilateral Ties Amid Global Challenges
India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, is set to undertake an official visit to the United Kingdom from November 11 to November 15, 2023, as confirmed by the external affairs ministry. The visit aims to strengthen the growing bilateral partnership between India and the UK. During his stay, Minister Jaishankar will engage in discussions with his UK counterpart, Foreign Secretary Sir James Cleverly, and meet other dignitaries.
The external affairs ministry highlighted the warm and thriving relationship between India and the UK, emphasizing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership launched in 2021 and the India-UK Roadmap 2030. The roadmap reflects a commitment to a partnership that benefits both nations.
Amidst global tensions, particularly the conflict between Israel and Hamas in West Asia, the visit takes on added significance. However, it remains unclear if the UK-India Free Trade Agreement will be on the agenda. Talks on the agreement, expected to be signed in October, are ongoing to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome.
Additionally, there is uncertainty about discussions regarding rising incidents of Khalistani separatism and hooliganism impacting the safety of the Hindu population and the Indian diaspora in the UK. India has previously urged the UK to take measures to prevent harassment by Khalistani separatists, a matter that may or may not be addressed during the visit.
In the context of global developments and regional concerns, Minister Jaishankar’s visit is anticipated to contribute to further strengthening the friendly ties between India and the UK, addressing both bilateral and international issues of significance.
