Indian Airports Halt Issuing Visitor Passes After Threats to Air India
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in India has directed airport operators in Delhi and Punjab to stop issuing airport entry passes to visitors due to safety concerns. This action follows a recent video threat made by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the founder of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), who warned of an attempt to blow up an Air India flight on November 19, the day of the ICC World Cup final.
The BCAS order, issued on Monday, stated that “Issue of TAEPs (temporary airport entry passes) entry of visitors to the terminal building of the IGI (Indira Gandhi International) airport (in Delhi) and sale of visitors entry tickets will be banned.”
A Delhi airport official confirmed that they have already implemented this directive. The order suspends all airport entry passes for visitors except those involved in operational work until November 30.
The BCAS issued this precautionary directive due to continuous threat messages received from central agencies regarding “threat to civil aviation installations over all India airports like airports, airstrips, airfields, air force stations, helipads, flying schools, and aviation training schools.”
Additionally, the BCAS mandated the use of secondary ladder point checks (SLPC) on 100% of Air India flights at 161 airports and airports in Punjab. SLPC is a mandatory security protocol that involves frisking passengers and their hand-luggage by airline staff just before boarding the aircraft.
India has also called on Canada to enhance the security of Air India flights following the threat, and it has urged Canada to take action against Pannun for issuing the threat.
