The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an advisory late Friday urging Indian citizens to avoid all travel to Syria until further notice and advised those already in the country to leave at the earliest opportunity. “Given the current situation in Syria, Indian nationals are strongly advised to refrain from traveling there until further updates,” the MEA stated. “Indians in Syria are requested to stay connected with the Indian Embassy in Damascus via the emergency helpline number +963 993385973 (also available on WhatsApp) and the email ID hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in for updates.” The advisory added: “Those able to leave should do so on the earliest available commercial flights, while others are urged to exercise extreme caution, prioritize safety, and limit their movements to a minimum.”
Rebel forces in Syria have launched a rapid offensive against President Bashar al-Assad’s government, displacing at least 370,000 people since November 27, according to the United Nations. The insurgents, led by the jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have pledged to advance toward Homs and Damascus, Assad’s stronghold. This sudden surge has disrupted a long-standing stalemate in Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war. The offensive includes fighters from HTS and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army, a coalition of Syrian militias.
Earlier in the day, the MEA stated that it is monitoring the escalating conflict in Syria. “We are aware of the recent intensification of fighting in northern Syria and are closely following the developments. Approximately 90 Indian nationals are currently in Syria, including 14 employed with various UN organizations,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
“Our mission is maintaining close communication with these individuals to ensure their safety and security,” Jaiswal emphasized during his weekly media briefing.
