India extended their winning streak with an impressive eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the World Cup on Wednesday. In pursuit of a target of 273, Rohit Sharma exhibited a spectacular display of power-hitting, scoring a blazing 131 off 84 balls. His performance earned him the record for the most centuries in World Cup history. Additionally, Ishan Kishan (47), Virat Kohli (55 not out), and Shreyas Iyer (25 not out) contributed significantly to India’s commanding win, achieved in just 35 overs.
Rohit and Ishan orchestrated a formidable 156-run partnership for the opening wicket, setting the stage for India’s successful chase. Earlier in the match, Rohit Sharma achieved another milestone by hitting his 554th career six, surpassing West Indies star Chris Gayle. The India captain’s feat spans all three formats of the game, and his six against fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq in pursuit of a 273-run target showcased his exceptional prowess.
In addition to his record-breaking sixes, Rohit crossed the 1,000-run mark in World Cup matches and reached his 50 in just 30 balls, much to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd in the nearly packed stadium. Chris Gayle, the self-styled “Universe Boss,” has 553 sixes to his name, while Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi is a distant third with 476.
India’s bowlers displayed great skill, limiting Afghanistan to 272/8 after 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah claimed four wickets, while Hardik Pandya took two, and Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur each contributed one. Afghanistan’s skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai made commendable efforts to bolster their team’s score.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya played a pivotal role by breaking the partnership between Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai, helping India regain control after a few expensive overs. The Afghanistan openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, got off to a steady start, but Jasprit Bumrah provided India with its first breakthrough by dismissing Ibrahim Zadran.
India clashed with Afghanistan in their second match of the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley International Stadium in Delhi. The live action commenced at 2:00 PM, with the toss scheduled for 1:30 PM. Notably, the in-form Indian team missed the services of young cricket sensation Shubman Gill, who was absent due to a severe bout of dengue fever.
India initiated the tournament with a resounding victory over five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Despite facing early setbacks in the top order, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli’s remarkable innings propelled India to a memorable six-wicket win from a challenging position of 2/3.
Conversely, Afghanistan faced a tough start to the ODI World Cup with a six-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in their inaugural encounter at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala. Rohit Sharma’s India aimed to maintain their winning momentum and solidify their position at the top of the points table, while Afghanistan sought to make a statement by defeating the two-time world champions in their capital city.
