In a thrilling contest at the 19th Asian Games on Tuesday, India secured a spot in the semifinals by defeating Nepal by 23 runs. The victory was fueled by a remarkable 49-ball century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and a stellar bowling performance by Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi.
Yashasvi’s explosive century, a first in T20Is for him, came at the age of 21 years and 279 days, making him the youngest Indian to achieve this milestone. He surpassed the previous record held by Shubman Gill, who had reached a century at the age of 23 years and 146 days against New Zealand.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, India witnessed a strong powerplay performance from Yashasvi, who formed a century-opening partnership with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Ruturaj scored 25 off 23 balls, it was Yashasvi’s exceptional batting that set the foundation for India’s innings. Tilak Varma and Jitesh Sharma were dismissed early, but Rinku and Shivam Dube contributed with a 52-run partnership, with Rinku’s unbeaten 37 off 15 balls propelling India to a total exceeding 200.
In response, Nepal’s openers made a steady start but struggled to make a significant impact during the powerplay. While Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, and
Sundeep Jora provided useful contributions, but it became clear that their efforts would fall short.
Avesh and Bishnoi both claimed three wickets, while Sai Kishore had a successful debut, taking a wicket and three catches as India restricted Nepal to 179-9 in their 20 overs, securing a 23-run victory.
India’s next challenge in the semi-final will be determined by the outcome of the quarter-final match between Bangladesh and Malaysia, scheduled for Friday.
