India Reveals Astronaut Crew for Historic Gaganyaan Mission

In a historic announcement on February 27, 2024, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Research Center, the names of four astronauts for India’s upcoming space mission Gaganyaan were revealed. All four chosen individuals are IAF test pilots from the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in Bengaluru. Currently, the astronauts are going through vigorous training sessions to equip themselves with the mission.
Profiles of the Astronauts:
Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair (Kerala): An experienced pilot with over 2000 hours of flying experience
Group Captain Ajit Krishnan: A decorated pilot with expertise in various fighter aircraft
Group Captain Angad Pratap: Renowned for his technical proficiency and problem-solving abilities
Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla: The youngest member of the chosen astronauts
Emphasizing this announcement, ISRO chairman S Somanath said, “Three important projects are being dedicated to the nation which has been completed on time. These mark significant additions to ISRO infrastructure. We have seen tremendous progress made by ISRO with the kind of missions, especially Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1, which made the world turn back to look at India. The 2047 vision made public has ambitious projects to make India Viksit Bharat, and ISRO will work towards achieving this.”
The Gaganyaan mission is India’s ambitious human spaceflight program aimed at sending this crew of astronauts into low Earth orbit for up to seven days. Named after the Sanskrit words for “sky” (gagana) and “vehicle” (yana), the mission signifies India’s growing capabilities in space exploration. Gaganyaan is a significant milestone for India’s space program, marking its entry into the realm of human spaceflight.
