India has reiterated its commitment to fostering a “positive and constructive relationship” with Bangladesh while addressing concerns over border security and recent diplomatic exchanges. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stressed that New Delhi’s approach is focused on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity to shared interests.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, MEA spokesperson Arindam Jaiswal highlighted India’s aspiration to enhance bilateral ties for the benefit of citizens of both countries. He affirmed, “We want to move in a positive direction. Our approach with the people and government of Bangladesh has always been positive, and it remains unchanged.”
The briefing comes after recent diplomatic interactions, in which Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner to India, Mohammad Nurul Islam, was summoned by the MEA. New Delhi expressed its concern over cross-border crimes and emphasised the need for collaborative action on agreed border security measures.
India pointed out that measures such as barbed wire fencing, border lighting, and the installation of technical equipment are necessary steps to combat cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, and human trafficking. “These measures are aimed at ensuring a secure and crime-free border,” Jaiswal said. He urged Bangladesh to implement previous consensus on border management.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Dhaka in December underscored India’s focus on promoting stability and inclusiveness in Bangladesh. During his meetings with Bangladeshi leaders, including Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hossain, Misri emphasised India’s support for “democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive” Bangladesh.
The MEA spokesperson also referred to concerns raised by Bangladesh’s foreign ministry over recent fencing activities along the India-Bangladesh border. Dhaka had summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express its objections. In response, New Delhi reiterated its commitment to follow existing protocols and agreements and stressed that its security measures were in line with mutual commitments.
Despite recent tensions, both countries have expressed a desire to maintain open communication and resolve differences amicably. India is optimistic about strengthening relations through cooperative efforts that prioritise the well-being and security of its people.
