The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a formidable coalition of 28 political parties, is going through internal turmoil as it prepares to challenge the BJP’s dominance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Recent events have brought to light differences within the alliance, specifically between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on one side.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav openly criticized the Congress for perceived political opportunism during a rally in the Jatara Assembly seat in Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh. He accused the Congress of conducting a caste survey solely for electoral purposes. According to Yadav, the SP’s agenda includes conducting a caste census to ensure people’s rights and dignity.
Surprisingly, the Congress has recently initiated discussions on the same topic, which could indicate that voter loyalties are shifting away from the BJP. The INDIA alliance is not just a verbal sparring match. In key states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, uncertainty looms over seat-sharing arrangements with smaller coalition members. Notably, in Madhya Pradesh, the SP and Congress have decided to run separately, whereas the AAP is running independently in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
In Rohtak, Haryana, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal used the opportunity to highlight his party’s organizational prowess and widespread appeal. With assurance, Kejriwal declared that the AAP’s organizational structure is superior to that of the BJP and Congress. He stressed that the goals and aspirations of the people form the basis of any organization. He continued by saying that since the AAP has come to represent hope for the majority of people, even kids would be happy to join. Amidst the continuing strain, senior Congressman Jairam Ramesh restated the party’s commitment to the INDIA alliance, stressing that the party was founded primarily with the Lok Sabha elections in mind. While he conceded that the alliance had momentarily turned its focus to state elections, he reassured that their determination to fortify the alliance in anticipation of the national polls would not fail.
Questions regarding the alliance’s unity and preparedness to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are raised by these developments within the INDIA coalition, adding an intriguing layer of complexity to the political landscape.
