Constitution Day, observed annually on November 26 in India, commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. This significant day, also known as National Law Day, serves to emphasize the importance of constitutional values among citizens and create awareness about the Constitution’s architect, Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2015, while laying the foundation stone for the Statue of Equality, this day holds immense relevance. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the government’s decision to mark November 26 as ‘Constitution Day’ to promote constitutional values.

The adoption of the Constitution in 1949, followed by its enactment on January 26, 1950 — celebrated as Republic Day — cemented India’s governance framework. Dr. BR Ambedkar, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, played a pivotal role in crafting the Indian Constitution.

India’s Constitution stands as the world’s lengthiest written constitution for any sovereign nation. Besides emphasizing Constitutional Fundamental Duties, it upholds principles of justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. The Constitution affirms India as a socialist, secular, democratic republic.

Fascinatingly, the Indian Constitution is hand-written and designed. Nand Lal Bose, a luminary of Indian art, adorned each page’s borders with his artistic flair. The calligraphic expertise of Prem Behari Narain Raizada meticulously inscribed the Constitution, written on parchment sheets designed to endure for centuries, weighing 3.75 kgs.

The drafting process consumed nearly three years, symbolizing the dedication of 284 members who signed the document, signifying the culmination of the Constitution-making endeavor. Drafted in Hindi and English, it comprises 22 parts with 448 articles, 12 schedules, 5 appendices, and 115 amendments.

This historic document not only defines India’s governance but also represents a meticulous effort to encapsulate the nation’s ethos and aspirations. Samvidhan Divas serves as a reminder of India’s commitment to its constitutional values and the enduring legacy of its visionary framers.
