The Indian Consulate in Canada canceled its scheduled consular camps for issuing life certificates due to security agencies’ “inability to provide the minimum security protection” to the event organizers, according to the Consulate General of India in Toronto. On Thursday, the Consulate announced the decision on X, citing security concerns.
This announcement follows an incident where pro-Khalistan supporters reportedly attacked Hindu community members at a consular camp organized outside the Hindi Sabha Temple in Brampton, near Toronto. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern over the incident, marking India’s formal protest.
Recent disruptions had also targeted similar camps in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2 and 3. Speaking in the House of Commons, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the violence, clarifying that the instigators did not represent the Sikh or Hindu communities, though he did not specifically mention Khalistani separatists.
As Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas approached, Trudeau emphasized Canada’s commitment to unity amidst these celebrations. Meanwhile, the Hindu Canadian Foundation, a non-profit supporting the Hindu community, shared footage of the Brampton attack, stating that Khalistani terrorists had targeted children and women. The Indian High Commission condemned the “violent disruption” by anti-India elements at the Brampton camp, underscoring the need for security measures for any future events.
In a statement, the High Commission expressed disappointment that routine consular activities faced such disruptions and voiced concerns for the safety of attendees, including Indian nationals who rely on these services.
