Amitabh Kant, former CEO of NITI Aayog, responded to Rahul Gandhi’s recent remark about Indians using ‘Made in China’ mobile phones. Kant shared “facts” on the X platform, claiming that India is the second-largest producer of handsets globally. According to Kant, almost 100% of mobiles sold in the Indian market this year were ‘Made in India,’ compared to 98% in 2022. He highlighted the growth in local manufacturing, with India crossing 2 billion mobile handset productions during 2014-2022.

Additionally, around 20% of the mobile handsets produced in India are exported. Kant credited government initiatives like Production Linked Incentive (PLI), Atma Nirbhar Bharat, and Phased Manufacturing Program for boosting local manufacturing and value addition in the mobile industry.

Rahul Gandhi, during a rally in Madhya Pradesh, criticized the BJP government, pointing out the ‘Made in China’ label on T-shirts, cameras, and phones. Kant’s response emphasized the significant strides India has made in mobile phone production, reducing dependency on Chinese imports and promoting self-reliance in the sector. The growth in local manufacturing is seen as a positive development in line with the government’s initiatives to boost the country’s economy and create jobs.
