The upcoming 2 plus 2 meeting between India and Australia, involving foreign minister Penny Wong, defence minister Richard Marles, external affairs minister S Jaishankar, and defence minister Rajnath Singh, holds significant importance. The dialogue, initiated in 2021, is an annual event between the two countries and reflects their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, in line with international law.
Addressing shared concerns over Chinese aggression in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, the meeting is likely to emphasize the importance of a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. Both nations, being members of the Quad and participating in Exercise Malabar, aim to strengthen regional security cooperation.
The bilateral ties extend beyond strategic interests, encompassing crucial resources such as lithium and uranium. Australia’s significant lithium deposits contribute to the global demand for battery production, particularly for electric vehicles, aligning with efforts to combat climate change. Additionally, Australia’s abundance of coking coal remains essential for India until green infrastructure becomes more widespread.
The agenda will include discussions on supply chain mechanisms, deepening defense collaboration, especially within the naval domain. The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, with potential global ramifications, will also be addressed in the context of maintaining regional stability.
The 2 plus 2 meeting underscores the multifaceted nature of India-Australia relations, highlighting their shared commitment to addressing regional challenges, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific, and fostering economic and strategic cooperation.
