In a surprising turn of events, India and Pakistan have catapulted to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table, leaving cricket fans worldwide astonished. The sudden rise to the top can be attributed to severe penalties imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on England and Australia. The development has put the two Asian rivals in a prime position to potentially secure a historic first-ever WTC final showdown.
Despite the WTC’s third cycle having just commenced, India and Pakistan have managed to establish an undeniable head start. Their recent series victories against West Indies and Sri Lanka, respectively, have contributed significantly to their improved position. However, the primary impetus behind their ascent in rankings can be traced back to the ICC’s decision to dock points from England and Australia.
During the recently-concluded Ashes series, England faced the brunt of ICC sanctions after being penalized with a staggering loss of 19 points for maintaining a slow-over rate. In a similar vein, Australia faced a deduction of 10 points for the same offense in the fourth Test. As a result, these penalties have significantly affected their standings, placing them at different ends of the WTC points table.

Australia, despite earning 28 points in the five-match Ashes series, now stands at No. 3 with a percentage of points (PCT) at 30. On the other hand, England, after losing 19 points, has seen their PCT plummet to a mere 15, placing them at No. 5, even behind the winless West Indies.
This unexpected twist of events has bolstered India and Pakistan’s confidence as they continue to build momentum. Pakistan kicked off the 2023-25 campaign with a perfect point percentage of 100 after a clean sweep against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, India secured the second spot with a PCT of 66.66% following a win and a draw in their series against West Indies.
Despite the benefits for India and Pakistan, the ICC’s stringent penalties have been met with criticism from England and Australian fans. Opener Usman Khawaja expressed his displeasure on social media, questioning the logic behind docking points for slow over-rates due to uncontrollable external factors, such as rain interruptions.
With New Zealand, South Africa, and Bangladesh yet to play in this WTC cycle, the competition remains open. However, the early advantage acquired by India and Pakistan is undeniably significant, and they are eager to capitalize on their strong start.
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits further action in the WTC, fans, players, and experts continue to speculate on whether India and Pakistan will indeed meet in the historic final. For now, their aspirations remain alive, while England and Australia focus on bouncing back from their ICC-induced setback.
