September 28, 2024: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused India of failing to honor United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, which he claimed call for a plebiscite to allow the people of Kashmir to determine their future. Sharif specifically condemned India’s revocation of Article 370 on 5th August 2019, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status. He described this move as illegal and a violation of Kashmiri rights, alleging that India was trying to impose a “final solution” by changing the region’s demographics through settler-colonialism.
“Pakistan will respond most decisively to any Indian incursion. Therefore, to secure durable peace, India must reverse the unilateral and illegal measures it has taken since 5th August 2019, and enter into a dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue in accordance with the UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he said.
Sharif accused Indian forces of severe human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir, including curfews, extrajudicial killings, and the abduction of Kashmiris, framing India’s actions as brutal oppression. He also said: “The Kashmiri people are resolute in rejecting the false Indian identity that New Delhi seeks to impose upon them. They endure severe conditions and atrocities committed every hour. India’s policy of brutal occupation and coercion has ensured that Burhan Wani’s legacy continues to inspire the struggle and sacrifices of millions of Kashmiris…”
Exercising its Right to Reply in the UNGA, First Secretary in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Bhavika Mangalanandan, stated: “This assembly regrettably witnessed a travesty this morning. A country run by the military, with a global reputation for terrorism, narcotics trade, and transnational crime, has had the audacity to attack the world’s largest democracy. I speak about the reference to India in the speech of the Pakistani PM. As the world knows, Pakistan has long employed cross-border terrorism as a weapon against its neighbors. It has attacked our parliament, our financial capital, Mumbai, marketplaces, and pilgrimage routes. The list is long…”
“For such a country to speak about violence anywhere is hypocrisy at its worst. It is even more extraordinary for a country with a history of rigged elections to talk about political choices—that too, in a democracy,” she added.
The envoy also went on to remind Pakistan about the “genocide it committed in 1971.” “The world can see for itself what Pakistan really is. We are talking about a nation that for long hosted Osama bin Laden. A country whose fingerprints are on so many terrorist incidents across the world, whose policies attract the dregs of many societies to make it their home,” she added.
India concluded by warning that Pakistan’s continued support for terrorism will inevitably bring consequences.
The statement came after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif alleged that India has failed in its commitments to implement the UNSC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
