In a significant step towards regional environmental cooperation, India and Bhutan agreed on Friday to jointly tackle climate change and environmental challenges. The agreement focuses on air quality, forest and wildlife management, and capacity building in these critical areas.

During a meeting between the Bhutanese delegation led by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Gem Tshering and India’s Union Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh, both nations discussed enhancing cooperation on various environmental fronts. Key areas of collaboration include tackling air quality issues, climate change adaptation, and the management of forests, wildlife, and natural resources.

Minister Singh expressed gratitude towards Minister Tshering for Bhutan’s participation in the International Big Cat Alliance, an initiative led by India aimed at protecting the world’s seven big cat species. Singh highlighted the shared geographic and ecological bonds between the two countries, as well as their common democratic values and mutual concerns regarding climate change.

Minister Tshering shared insights from the Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscape Conference held in April 2024 in Paro, Bhutan. He emphasized Bhutan’s status as a carbon-negative country, largely due to its substantial hydropower-generated energy, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.

The agreement between India and Bhutan represents a deepening of ties in environmental governance and sustainability, reflecting a regional approach to addressing global environmental and climate challenges. The collaboration is expected to enhance the capacity of both nations to manage their natural resources effectively and sustainably, further contributing to their long-standing bilateral relations.
