India Aims to Make A Few Singapores, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a meeting with Singapore’s new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, expressed India’s desire to replicate Singapore’s success by creating “a few Singapores” within the country. He praised Singapore as a role model for developing nations and an important partner in India’s Act East policy.

Strengthening India-Singapore Collaboration

Speaking at a joint event, PM Modi emphasized the strong collaborative efforts between India and Singapore in various sectors such as digitalization, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, healthcare, and sustainability. He highlighted the establishment of a ministerial roundtable as a pioneering step toward fostering deeper cooperation. Modi expressed confidence that Singapore would continue to progress rapidly under Wong’s leadership, adding that the two countries share a commitment to democratic values, which strengthens their partnership.

Growing Financial Ties and Technological Collaboration

The prime minister encouraged the significant growth in financial relations between the two countries. Over the past decade, bilateral trade has more than doubled, while mutual investments have tripled, reaching over $150 billion. PM Modi also mentioned Singapore’s role in India’s technological advancement, highlighting the successful launch of the UPI Person-to-Person payment system between the two nations. He emphasized India’s commitment to building a robust semiconductor ecosystem and highlighted the rapid growth of startups, particularly in smaller cities across India.

In conclusion, PM Modi underscored the political stability in India and the government’s dynamic policies, which are helping the country advance aggressively in several key areas, including semiconductors and innovation.
