The 78th Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi saw the attendance of 6,000 special guests, including the Indian team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, students benefiting from the Atal Innovation Mission, Border Roads Organisation workers, and sarpanches.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will once again unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort, marking his 11th consecutive year in this role. Security measures have been heightened across India, with over 10,000 police officers, facial recognition cameras, and snipers deployed in Delhi. Additionally, security camps have been established in 13 villages in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist-affected Bastar region, where the Tricolour will be hoisted for the first time for Independence Day celebrations. At the Red Fort, snipers, elite SWAT commandos, kite catchers, and sharpshooters will be stationed at key points to ensure the safety of the Prime Minister and other important guests. Furthermore, 700 AI-based facial recognition CCTV cameras with high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom capabilities have been installed in central Delhi and New Delhi to enhance surveillance.
On the eve of Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the importance of strengthening affirmative action for inclusion and urged the rejection of divisive social hierarchies. She also praised India’s successful elections as a boost to democratic forces worldwide. Meanwhile, on August 14, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the hardships faced by those affected by India’s partition in 1947 and reaffirmed the commitment to maintaining national unity and brotherhood. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to those who suffered during the 1947 partition, asserting that a nation that remembers its history is better positioned to build a powerful future.
