Imran Khan’s PTI Leads as Nawaz Sharif Seeks Coalition, Claims Victory ‘Without Majority’

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif claimed victory in the general elections while addressing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supporters, stating that his party has emerged as the largest in the results and will seek to form a coalition government, despite trailing behind independent candidates led by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The voting concluded on Thursday, February 8, amid allegations of electoral misconduct, raising concerns about the integrity of ‘free and fair’ elections. To form a government, a party must win 133 seats out of the 265 in the National Assembly. According to data from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), PTI-backed independent candidates have won 98 seats so far, with PML-N and PPP trailing behind with 69 and 51 seats respectively.
Nawaz Sharif, the three-time former Prime Minister, urged rival political parties on Friday to form a coalition government and play a positive role together in stabilizing the country and addressing its difficulties. “We can’t hold elections again and again,” he said. “We were all sitting together yesterday, but didn’t address you because the results were not in. We are inviting everyone today to rebuild this injured Pakistan and sit with us,” he added as the country appears to be heading towards a hung Parliament.
He also announced that he has tasked his brother and PML-N president, Shehbaz Sharif, to reach out to the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), headed by the Bhutto-Zardari family, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Fazlur Rehman, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui for the formation of a coalition government.
